Rivet Busters: Design, Components, Working Mechanism & Applications
Old rivets, seized bolts and steel plate rarely come apart without concentrated force. On repair, fabrication and demolition sites, that force often comes from rivet busters: handheld tools that cut through fasteners and break back concrete on bridge decks and foundation piles.
Comparing rivet buster specifications involves assessing tool weight, length, piston stroke, blow rate and air supply requirements. The handle and the accessories a tool accepts matter just as much.
What Are Rivet Busters?
A rivet buster is a handheld pneumatic percussion tool, also called a pneumatic rivet buster or air rivet buster. It delivers rapid, repeated blows to a cutting accessory held in the front end of the rivet buster tool, and that accessory does the work. The steel, chisel or point is chosen for the task and replaced as it wears.
As an industrial rivet removal tool, a rivet buster cuts and drives out existing rivets and bolts. A rivet hammer, by contrast, forms rivets rather than removing them.
A rivet buster is an elongated tool built around its cylinder housing. The handle sits at the rear and the accessory projects from the front, so the operator works from behind the tool.
ACE Pneumatics offers its heavy duty rivet busters in two handle configurations:
D-handle with inside pull trigger: ACE RB 133 D, ACE RB 1133 D, ACE RB4611 D, ACE RB4608 D, ACE RB 4160 D and ACE RB 4140 D.
Pistol grip with outside push trigger: ACE RB4611 P, ACE RB4608 P, ACE RB 4160 P and ACE RB 4140 P.
ACE RB4611 P, ACE RB4611 D, ACE RB4608 D, ACE RB 4160 D and ACE RB 4140 D are suitable for horizontal work and some vertical work.
Like other pneumatic percussion tools, a rivet buster works through a repeating cycle of air flow and piston impact.
Air enters the tool from the supply hose through the threaded inlet.
The throttle admits air to the operating mechanism when the operator presses the trigger. A teasing throttle allows this flow to be opened gradually.
Air distribution drives the piston, switching pressure between the two sides of the piston so it travels forward and back along the cylinder.
The piston strikes repeatedly, hitting the accessory shank at the end of each forward stroke and passing its energy into the cutting steel.
The accessory acts on the workpiece, concentrating each blow on a small contact area to cut a rivet head, shear a bolt or break concrete.
Spent air is exhausted, and the cycle repeats for as long as the trigger is held.

All 12 models list an operating pressure of 6.2 bar (90 psi), air consumption of 21 l/s (approximately 45 cfm), and a ½-inch NPTF air inlet. The 12.7 mm inlet figure is the nominal thread size in metric, not a measured bore.
Piston diameter is 30.2 mm for the ACE RB 133, RB 1133, RB4611 and RB4608 models, and 30 mm for the ACE RB 4160 and RB 4140 models.
Weight indicates handling effort, particularly away from the horizontal. Length helps judge fit in confined spaces.
The models have different combinations of piston stroke and blow rate; neither value alone establishes impact energy or cutting performance.
Air consumption is a supply requirement, not a measure of tool output.
"Standard" and "Jumbo" are shank category labels, not dimensions. A category alone does not establish that a particular accessory will fit.
Stepped cylinder (ACE RB 1133 D, ACE RB4611 P, ACE RB4611 D, ACE RB4608 P, ACE RB4608 D): designed to prevent accidental ejection of the piston from the cylinder.
Teasing throttle (ACE RB 1133 D, ACE RB4611 P, ACE RB4611 D, ACE RB4608 P, ACE RB4608 D): gives gradual control of air flow, useful when starting a cut or seating the point.
Teflon throttle valve (ACE RB 1133 D): a Teflon construction for the throttle valve.
Forged steel handle (drop-forged D-style on ACE RB 133 D and ACE RB 1133 D; forged on ACE RB4611 P, ACE RB4611 D, ACE RB4608 P and ACE RB4608 D): intended for repeated shock loading.
Deeply case-hardened alloy steel cylinder (ACE RB 133 D and ACE RB 1133 D): a hardened working surface on the cylinder.
Hardened piston and cylinder (ACE RB4608 P): hardening applied to both main impact parts.
Heavy-duty upper and lower sleeves (ACE RB 133 D and ACE RB 1133 D): fitted as standard on these two models.
Adjustable exhaust deflector (ACE RB 133 D): allows the exhaust direction to be changed to suit the operator's position.
Rivet Buster Applications in Construction and Fabrication
Cutting and removing large rivets and bolts (all 12 models): the cutting steel must suit the fastener size, and the operator needs a clear line of approach to the rivet head or bolt.
Cutting metal tanks or plates (all 12 models, including underground tanks for ACE RB 133 D and ACE RB 133 P): the accessory must suit the plate material and thickness.
Bridge deck work (all 12 models; ACE RB 133 D, ACE RB 1133 D and ACE RB 1133 P suit weight-sensitive bridge deck projects): tool weight becomes significant over long periods of deck work.
Concrete demolition, restoration and foundation work: these tasks need a point or chisel suited to concrete or rock, not a rivet-cutting steel.
Medium to heavy concrete demolition or restoration: all 12 models.
Foundation-pillar de-capping: ACE RB 133 D, ACE RB 1133 D, ACE RB 1133 P, ACE RB4608 P, ACE RB 4160 P and ACE RB 4140 P.
Pile renovation: ACE RB4611 P and ACE RB 133 P.
Rock and concrete work: ACE RB4611 D, ACE RB4608 P, ACE RB 4160 P and ACE RB 4140 P.
Cutting and ripping operations (ACE RB4611 P, ACE RB4611 D, ACE RB4608 D, ACE RB 133 P, ACE RB 4160 D and ACE RB 4140 D): ripping depends on stable footing and a secure hold on the tool.
Foundry and petrochemical industry work (all models except ACE RB 133 D, ACE RB 1133 D and ACE RB 1133 P): site suitability, including flammable atmospheres, must be assessed separately.
A rivet buster can share the site air supply with other pneumatic tools. Changing the accessory lets one tool move between tasks.
ACE publishes Rivet Buster Safety & Maintenance Instructions for the range, and its requirements should be followed.
The points below are general good practice for pneumatic tools and do not replace the official instructions.
Lubrication: ACE lists an air line lubricator among the accessories for these models. Lubricant type and arrangement should be taken from the official instructions.
Hose and fittings: ACE also lists hose pipe as an accessory. Hoses and fittings should be kept in sound condition and suited to the tool's NPTF inlet.
Front end and accessory: the retainer, sleeves (where fitted) and accessory shank should be inspected for wear or damage.
Cutting-tool condition: worn or damaged cutting steels should be dressed or replaced as the official instructions specify.
Loose or worn parts: the tool should not be operated with loose, cracked or worn components.
Isolation: the air supply should be disconnected before the tool is inspected or the accessory is changed.
Spare parts: replacements should match the model's own parts list.
Maintenance reduces avoidable wear but does not remove every risk of breakdown or the need for safe working practice.
Task and workpiece material: identify whether the main work is rivet and bolt removal, plate cutting or concrete breaking, and confirm the model suits it.
Access and working direction: measure the space around the work and establish whether the tool will mainly be used horizontally or at an angle.
Air supply at the tool: confirm that the compressor and hose system can deliver the required air consumption and pressure at the tool end, allowing for hose length and other tools on the same line.
Handle configuration: confirm that the chosen model's handle suits the operators and the working position.
Accessory and retainer compatibility: confirm that the cutting steels the work requires are available for the model and have a shank compatible with the tool's front-end interface, and check the retainer arrangement in the model's exploded view.
Documentation and spares: request the leaflet, exploded view, parts list and safety and maintenance instructions for the exact model, and confirm that model-specific spare parts are available.
Conclusion
A rivet buster suits the job when its handle configuration, accessory interface and air supply all match the work.
